In the face of the unprecedented challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Malabar Social Service Society (MASSS) swiftly mobilized its resources and networks to provide essential support and assistance to the communities most affected by the crisis. Here’s a glimpse of the impactful initiatives undertaken by MASSS during these challenging times:

  1. Formation of COVID-19 Taskforce: Recognizing the urgency of the situation, MASSS, in collaboration with the Kottayam diocese, established a dedicated Taskforce comprising 50 members. This Taskforce was instrumental in reaching out to the most vulnerable segments of society during the lockdown period. Additionally, they played a crucial role in the dignified burial of the deceased. Volunteers from the Knanaya Catholic congress and Knanaya Catholic youth league actively participated in these efforts, demonstrating solidarity and compassion in times of need.
  2. KARUTHAL – COVID-19 Livelihood Project: To alleviate the economic hardships faced by those who lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the pandemic, MASSS partnered with various Knanaya Catholic associations abroad to launch the “KARUTHAL – COVID-19 Livelihood Project.” Through this initiative, financial support was extended to 250 families to engage in income-generating activities such as goat rearing, hen rearing, cow farming, fishery, and tailoring. Additionally, 75 families received assistance for educational and medical needs, empowering them to navigate through these challenging times with resilience.
  3. KARUTHAL – COVID-19 Medical Support Program: Understanding the immense financial strain caused by medical expenses, MASSS, in collaboration with Knanaya Catholic associations abroad, implemented the “KARUTHAL – COVID-19 Medical Support Program.” This initiative provided crucial financial assistance to 35 economically disadvantaged families in the Kannur and Kasaragod regions, easing their burden and ensuring access to essential healthcare services.
  4. Donation of Oxygen Concentrators: Recognizing the critical shortage of medical equipment, particularly oxygen concentrators, MASSS took proactive steps to address this pressing need. Through concerted efforts, MASSS donated oxygen concentrators to hospitals in Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad districts, bolstering their capacity to care for COVID-19 patients and saving lives.
  5. Distribution of Medical Kits: In a bid to safeguard the health of economically disadvantaged families, MASSS initiated the distribution of comprehensive medical kits in Kannur and Wayanad regions. These kits, comprising essential supplies such as pulse oximeters, batteries, steamers, thermometers, masks, and hand wash, aimed to promote preventive healthcare practices and mitigate the spread of the virus within vulnerable communities.
  6. Tele-Counseling Services: Understanding the psychological toll of the pandemic, MASSS established Tele-Counseling services staffed by five dedicated counselors. These services provided much-needed emotional support and guidance to individuals and families grappling with the psychological impact of COVID-19, ensuring that no one felt alone during these challenging times.

In summary, MASSS’s unwavering commitment to serving humanity, coupled with its collaborative efforts and innovative approaches, has played a pivotal role in mitigating the adverse effects of the COVID-19 crisis on vulnerable communities. By prioritizing compassion, solidarity, and resilience, MASSS continues to be a beacon of hope and support for those in need, embodying the spirit of service and compassion that defines its mission.
